On page 14, National Suicide Day is brought up.  The reason for this “holiday” is because Shadrack cannot stand anticipation.  He is afraid of death and wants to know his outcome without the element of surprise.  In a strange way, this reminds me of Emma.  Although Emma would never declare a day for suicide, she seems to want to know everything.  With her prior feeling towards marriage (in the beginning of the novel) and her matchmaking, she is firm with her decisions and leaves no room for fate.  Although these two characters are complete opposites, they can both be connected with their lack of patience.
