As we begin to read Sula, I am beginning to see the connections with Emma!  So far in Sula, we see strict public protocol for behavior, as well as a focus on how the public percieves you.  Whether one’s behavior is in accordance with what the public expectations are dramatically impacts how you are treated.  However, in Sula we begin to see two different “public eyes” the main characters feel judged by:  other members of the African American community, and the larger public, in which African- Americans comprise the minority and are judged because of their African- American identity.
