I recently watched the 1996 version of Emma (the one with Gwyneth Paltrow). I found the choice of actors pretty accurate. In my opinion Gwyneth perfectly embodies Emma, she looks extremely young and even in the first 5 minutes, I could tell she was very blind, naive and childish. Mr. Knightly (side note: very attractive ) seems to have the father-child,brother-sister, and eventually lover relationship with Emma. Also Harriet’s look are nothing in comparison to Emma’s which perfectly visualizes their relationship, Emma being superior to Harriet of course. Miss Bates looks very weak and shy. She speaks a lot, although her voice is shakey and scared. The director really did a good job and making sure the actors look, speech, etc. match up to the characters in the novel.
