Although the restrictive social requirements demanded of women during the 19th century are well known, men were also subject to restrained social conduct.  According to “Victorian Courtship” (see link above), it was expected of gentlemen to rise when a lady first entered or exited a room.  Many social restrictions were also placed with regards to men’s behavior around women.  Gentlemen were expected to remove their hats when speaking with a lady, and never remove their coats when with a lady.
